Still, Ohioans can likely expect milder temperatures this winter, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 2024-25 winter forecast.

In the meantime, the winter solstice is coming soon. Here’s how to know when the solstice occurs and how much daylight Ohio will see.

The winter solstice will take place in 2024 Saturday December 21st.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Northern Hemisphere solstice occurs at 4:21 a.m. ET. It is the day with the fewest hours of sunshine of the year – essentially the “shortest day” of the year.

Unlike other long-range forecasts, the almanac also predicts a wet and cold winter for Ohio.

How many hours of daylight will Ohio see on the winter solstice?

According to the United States Naval Observation, Ohio will have 9 hours and 20 minutes of daylight on December 21, the day of the winter solstice.

Several days before and after December 21 also have similar daylight hours, but the winter solstice is shorter by a few seconds.

What is the winter solstice?

The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere because on this day part of the Earth is furthest from the sun. That’s why the winter solstice brings the fewest hours of sunshine in the year. This day will have the shortest day and the longest night.

The winter solstice occurs on December 21st or 22nd each year in the Northern Hemisphere.

But the good news comes right after the winter solstice, when the nights get shorter and the days get longer. This means we’ll be back in the spirit of spring and summer long before winter ends.

When does winter end?

Winter ends on Thursday, March 20, 2025, when the Vernal Equinox (Vernal Equinox) begins.

When spring begins, it is already summer time again. On Sunday March 9th our clocks will be set forward in the early hours of the morning.
