When will the final CFP rankings come out? What Miami soccer fans need to know

The College Football Playoff is finally in sight. When will the Miami Hurricanes find out their fate? Could they really miss the playoffs?

That’s certainly possible after Miami lost 42-38 to Syracuse in Saturday’s regular-season finale. UM (10-2, 6-2 in ACC) will have to watch as SMU plays Clemson in the ACC championship game next week. The winner will secure a spot in the CFP bracket, while the loser at Miami will have to wait for the final rankings announcement to see if they received an overall bid.

Another ranking will be released on the Tuesday before the conference championship games. But the ones that count will be revealed next week on Selection Sunday.

Here’s what Miami fans need to know, including the dates for the CFP final round reveal and predictions of whether the Hurricanes will make the field:

Final CFP rankings date

  • Date: Sunday December 8th

  • Time: Noon ET

The final College Football Playoff rankings will be announced starting Sunday, December 8th at 12:00 p.m.

Miami CFP Predictions

Miami enters championship week as No. 6 in the CFP rankings, but will plummet with the next updates on Tuesday. Syracuse was the second unranked team the Hurricanes lost to this season, having lost for the first time at Georgia Tech on November 9th.

The Hurricanes have suffered two losses and are the 59th strongest squad in the country, according to ESPN. Of the two-loss teams in last week’s CFP rankings, only Arizona State and Iowa State are rated lower, and not by much.

But that’s not all the Hurricanes have to worry about, as Alabama, Ole Miss and South Carolina, all three-loss SEC teams, won their Rivalry Week matchups. The Crimson Tide and Gamecocks in particular could knock UM out of the playoffs, as both have signature wins to their name (Alabama defeated South Carolina and Georgia, while USC has a six-game winning streak and defeated Texas A&M and Clemson). Miami has not played any team in the current rankings, and their best wins are the season opener against Florida 7-5 and a shootout win against Louisville 8-4.

Having the No. 1 offense in the country all season could keep the Hurricanes from missing the playoffs like Florida State did last season. Fans will want to see Cam Ward and Co. compete with the best teams in the country, something the committee is clearly taking into account, even if the defense can’t quite keep up. But with Alabama a viable option, it’s hard to imagine Miami breaking through. And if Clemson wins the ACC Championship bid, consider it nearly impossible.

How many teams participate in the College Football Playoff?

This year, the College Football Playoff will expand from four to twelve teams. The top four conference champions in the rankings will receive first-round byes. The other eight will face off for playoff games at the home stadium of the higher-ranked team.

The winners of the first round qualify for the quarterfinals, which are played in traditional New Year’s Six bowl games against teams that received a bye. There is no reseeding. The quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinals in the Orange Bowl or the Cotton Bowl, with the national championship taking place the following week.
