President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of nearly 1,500 people and pardoning 39 others in “the largest one-day act of clemency in modern history,” the White House announced Thursday.

According to a White House press release, the amnesty will be extended to approximately 1,500 people who have been in home confinement during the COVID pandemic, as well as 39 additional people who have been convicted of nonviolent crimes, particularly drug crimes, and have “demonstrated successful rehabilitation.” .

Biden said in the statement that he would “take further steps in the coming weeks” and continue to consider clemency petitions to “advance equal justice under the law, promote public safety, support rehabilitation and reintegration, and provide meaningful second chances.”

The White House said those pardoned include a decorated military veteran, a nurse who helped drive vaccination efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic and an addiction counselor who volunteers to help young people.

The moves come less than two weeks after Biden pardoned his son Hunter for gun and tax crimes, sparking a bipartisan backlash.
