Who made it to the College Football Playoff? Bracket, top 12 teams, snubs, more

Then there were 12.

On Sunday, the College Football Playoff selection committee unveiled the first-ever 12-team CFP round, ending long anticipation of 12 college football teams playing for the national championship.

No. 1 Oregon was picked with the No. 1 overall pick fresh off its first Big Ten championship against No. 3 Penn State. In addition to the Ducks, Georgia, Boise State and Arizona State were the three other conference champions who received a bye in the first round.

Clemson wreaked havoc in the ACC championship game against SMU on Saturday night with Nolan Hauser’s career-long 56-yard walk-off field goal to secure its fifth automatic berth. Because the Tigers were ranked the lowest conference champion, they will be a No. 12 seed and travel to No. 5 Texas in the first round – a difficult draw for a Power 4 conference champion.

The rest of the field was filled with Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Indiana, Tennessee and SMU. The Mustangs beat Alabama for the final spot in the CFP class, although SMU lost to Clemson.

The first round of the College Football Playoff will take place on Friday, December 20th and Saturday, December 21st on campus for the higher ranked overall teams, i.e. seeds 5-8.

The top four teams in the CFP bracket include: No. 1 Oregon; No. 2 Georgia; No. 3 Boise State; and No. 4 Arizona State. The fifth-seeded conference champion, Clemson, was seeded No. 12 as the Tigers ranked behind Arizona State in the final CFP Top 25.

Under the rule of the CFP format, the Ducks, Bulldogs, Broncos and Sun Devils all receive first-round byes, meaning they won’t play until the quarterfinals on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.

CFP snubbed: Who was left out of the College Football Playoff?

No. 11 Alabama
No. 13 Miami

Alabama and Miami are the “first two teams eliminated” in the final CFP rankings on Sunday. Miami had little to no chance of making the playoffs after finishing at No. 12 in the second-to-last CFP rankings with the assumption that the Big 12 champion would jump into the Top 12 and oust the Hurricanes.
