Primetime Emmy Award-winning actress Catherine O’Hara played the role of Kevin’s mother in the classic comedy Home alone. She also reprized her role in the 1992 sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Catherine O’Hara’s portrayal of Kevin’s mother brings a touch of humor and warmth to the film, making her character memorable for viewers of all ages.

Over the years, Catherine has played notable roles in several shows and films Schitt’s Creek (2015-20), Beetlejuice (1998), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024).

However, her iconic role in Home Alone was not originally planned for her.

Catherine O’Hara was reportedly not the first choice for the role of Kevin’s mother/Kate. To the surprise of the audience Home alone Cinematographer Julio Macat said in a statement metro that his partner and actress Elizabeth Perkins was initially considered for the role.

He further added:

“My wife, Elizabeth Perkins, had a similar situation when she was working on a film that was also very special. You know the movie, Big? She was the friend, Susan. “We hadn’t met yet and she almost did this movie a year before Home Alone, John Hughes asked her to play the role of Catherine O’Hara and she couldn’t do it, she was busy.”

Home alone ultimately received the award as one of the highest-grossing live-action comedy films, grossing around $476.7 million worldwide. One of the lead actors, Daniel Stern (Wet Bandit Marv), reportedly said in a statement about his role alongside co-star Joe Pesci (Henry):

“In a way we were classic characters. The friendship was fun, the film was fun, we both approached the silliness in our own way that was comfortable for each of us, and the chemistry was good.”
