Why the Kari Lake Voice of America nomination is perfect

Donald Trump pushes Kari Lake to be director of the Voice of America, a government-funded broadcasting group, and tells you everything you need to know about what the president-elect thinks about the media.

Not that you didn’t already know. We’ve always seen that he’s dismissive of journalists while at the same time addicted to the attention they give them. They are the enemy of the people, remember?

If they don’t praise him, they are being fair and impartial.

And no one has praised Trump like Lake, for whom he may have found a nice, soft landing spot. She supported his lies that the 2020 election was stolen. She has falsely claimed she won the 2022 Arizona governor’s race – a race in which her attacks on the media echoed those of her hero. She lost in her run for U.S. Senate in 2024 and again attacked the media, but did not dispute that loss. What can a twice-failed politician do?

Now we know.

Kari Lake has been a long-time Trump supporter and apologist

Lake, as you probably know, is a former member of the media. But practically since the day she left her job as a local anchor for Fox 10 in Phoenix — you may have heard her tout her media career a time or two — she has been a Trump supporter and apologist. And that means attacking the media whenever it suits her (or him).

Do you remember Election Day 2022? A reporter asked Lake if she would resign if Trump won in 2024 and choose her as his running mate if she won the governor’s race. Her response was exactly the kind of nonsense Trump likes.

“Are you new to this race?” she said. “Because we’ve talked about it before. I have answered this question. Not only will I be governor of Arizona for four years, but I will be governor for two terms. I’m going to be your worst nightmare for eight years.”

She was off for about eight years. But she wasn’t finished yet.

“And we will also reform the media,” Lake said. “We will make you journalists again.”

How did that turn out?

Some media are already capitulating to Trump

This absurd swagger — arrogant without a portfolio — is exactly what Trump is looking for in the VOA job. Finally, he posted on Truth Social naming Lake that she and the head of the agency would “ensure that American values of freedom and liberty are spread FAIRLY and ACCURATELY throughout the world, contrary to the lies told by spread by the fake news media.”

On Thursday, Trump said: “The media is a little tamed. I think they like us a lot better now. If not, we’ll just have to take them back in, and we don’t want that.”

In other words, he is looking for a scapegoat, someone who will parrot his views. Why shouldn’t he be? He makes friends in other places without even trying. Some media representatives are already bowing to him and giving up without a fight.

Amazon donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post, where he slammed the paper’s support for Kamala Harris for president. He also congratulated Trump effusively on his election victory.

Patrick Soon-Shiong, the owner of the Los Angeles Times, blocked his staff’s endorsement of Harris before it was published. Since then, he has talked about adding more conservative voices to the newspaper’s editorial board. The New York Times reported that Soon-Shiong would not publish an editorial critical of Trump’s Cabinet picks unless the newspaper also published a contrary opinion.

Lake is not credible. But these are two of the country’s leading newspapers trying to curry favor with someone who spent his first term belittling, belittling and attacking media outlets, and as his quote on Thursday shows, he plans to do so again when Journalists get in his way.

Giving lunch money to the playground bully is no guarantee of safety.

The Kari Lake Voice of America nomination is perfect in one respect

There’s no guarantee Lake will get the job. Trump can’t appoint her. He appoints the person who would appoint her someone to lead the US Agency for Global Media. Trump has not nominated anyone for the post, but whoever it is would, if confirmed, consider a candidate along with an advisory board.
