WI vs BAN 2024/25, WI vs BAN 2nd test match report, November 30th – December 3rd, 2024

Bangladesh 264 (Shadman 64, Seales 4-5, Shamar 3-49) and 268 (Jaker 91, Shadman 46, Mehidy 42, Roach 3-36) defeated West Indies 146 (Carty 40, Brathwaite 39, Rana 5-61, Mahmud 2-19) and 185 (Hodge 55, Brathwaite 43, Taijul 5-50, Mahmud 2-20) for 101 runs

Bangladesh recorded their first Test win in the West Indies in 15 years when they defeated the hosts by 101 runs in Jamaica. It was a remarkable comeback from the visitors after their big defeat in the first Test in Antigua, with the series ending 1-1. It was cathartic for a side that had lost their last five Tests so resoundingly, as the likes of Taijul Islam, Jaker Ali and Nahid Rana claimed their third away win of 2024 – their highest in a calendar year.

Left-arm spinner Taijul took 5 for 50 in the fourth innings to help bowl West Indies out for 185. It was his 15th five-wicket haul, fourth abroad and first in the Caribbean in 10 years. Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud and Rana took the other five wickets.

Rana took his first Test five-wicket haul in the second innings, helping West Indies to 146.

Bangladesh had scored just 164 in the first innings but their revival in the second innings was also remarkable. This was thanks to Jaker, who hit five sixes and eight fours in a 91 counterattack. Jaker scored 62 of Bangladesh’s 75 runs in the morning session of the fourth day.

The West Indies will feel they have wasted a great start to the Test match as Jayden Seales took a remarkable 5 for 4 in 15.5 overs. However, a fired up Seales lost runs in the third innings as Bangladesh changed the tempo in a lively third afternoon.

On the fourth morning, Jaker held Bangladesh’s key and extended their lead to 211. Things didn’t start well for him when Alzarri Joseph hit him on the top of his helmet. Bangladesh physiotherapist Bayezid Islam Khan took some time to clear Jaker as the BCB was concerned about his concussions in the past.

The situation worsened as Bangladesh lost consecutive wickets.

Taijul hit a short ball on the 14th after he and Jaker added 34 runs for the sixth wicket. Mominul Haque completed his second Test pair when he fell off his fourth ball. He looked visibly ill as he walked away, with Bangladesh’s cock now exposed.

With his back to the wall, Jaker went after the West Indies attack. He bowled Kemar Roach over wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva for a boundary. Jaker then hit a pull shot off Alzarri for his maiden six, which gave him his third consecutive fifty in his first three Tests. He is only the second Bangladeshi player after Zakir Hasan to achieve this feat.

Jaker made good progress in the next two balls. He hit a short ball to get a four over the slips and then followed it up with a hooked six. Jaker smashed Roach with a wide long-on in the next over, but he fought back with two more wickets. Roach removed Mahmud and Taskin in successive overs.

However, Jaker still had one more border crossing left in him. He smashed Shamar Joseph for two fours in one over, both pull shots, before smashing Roach straight to the ground for his fourth six. His fifth six was from Shamar, which was lifted over the wicket before falling to the deep later in the over.

Taijul got to work in the fifth round when he had Mikyle Louis in a pinch. Trying to hit the ball, Louis pushed the ball onto his front foot where Shahadat Hossain made a diving catch with his short front leg.

Sensing the need to carry the momentum, Brathwaite went after Bangladesh’s bowling. He had already hit a boundary with a square cut, but after the lunch break he drove Mahmud through the roof. He bowled Taijul over long-on for a six but Keacy Carty couldn’t quite clear the bowlers at the other end.

Taskin left Carty behind for 14 minutes after an accumulation of dot balls before Taijul was responsible for Brathwaite’s big throw. He troubled the West Indies captain a few times before making one turn and slam Brathwaite’s bat on the shoulder. Mahmudul Hasan Joy ran out of slip to his right to complete a tumbling catch. Taijul then managed to bowl one on an uneven spot and turn it back through Alick Athanaze’s big gap between bat and pad. Athanaze, who was going for an expansive drive, looked confused about his approach in his six-ball spell.

Throughout this time, Hodge maintained his form and appeared sharp as he learned regular boundaries. He hit Rana and cut Taskin in successive overs. He hit Mehidy for two fours in one over before going inside out to Taijul before tea.

The West Indies started the third session happily. Hodge reached his fifty with the first ball after the break but also fell shortly afterwards. Hodge played back to a Taijul charge, which was very low and trapped him with his left hand. Keshav Maharaj and Shoaib Bashir have also got him out in a similar manner before.

Taskin then cleared a shot from Justin Greaves, which also stayed a little low, but the batsman made no move to land low enough to hit the ball. Joshua Da Silva’s miserable run ended when Taijul had him lbw, yet another West Indies batsman who fell lbw on a ball they could have played off the front foot.

When Mehidy brought Mahmud in for a second spell, he immediately made an impression. He removed Alzarri and Roach to bring Bangladesh to the brink. Then came the big moment when Rana, who changed the momentum of the game with his 5-0 in the first innings, hit Shamar with a yorker and secured the hard-fought victory.
