Will Iowa have a white Christmas in 2024? What the forecast says

Iowans may experience a winter storm just before Christmas, but that doesn’t mean snow will stick to the ground. Nevertheless, the question arises every year: Will there be snow for Christmas this year?

Last year was a warm Christmas Day in Des Moines with a high of 53 degrees and a low of 32 degrees, about 20 degrees above average. Most of the state received at least half an inch of rain on December 25, 2023.

It looks like Iowa could see a repeat in 2024 as warmer weather heads toward the state. Here’s what AccuWeather says about a white Christmas in Iowa.

What are the prospects for a white Christmas in Iowa in 2024?

According to AccuWeather, Iowa has a “fair chance” of seeing snow before Christmas, but that doesn’t mean it will stick.

“Ames and Northward are generally in that 50 to 75% range,” AccuWeather forecasters told the Register. “But it’s getting warmer and the problem is I can’t see the snow that’s falling around.”

While a winter storm is expected to hit the Plains states on Christmas Eve, warmer weather the weekend before could keep snow at bay in Iowa. However, AccuWeather forecasters said it was still too early to be sure.
