Will it snow in Maryland on Christmas?

Will Maryland have a white Christmas this year?

Probably not. However, there is a chance of snow in the forecast for the morning of Christmas Eve.

According to the National Weather Service, the weather is expected to be sunny and cool in the Baltimore area during Christmas week and the start of Hanukkah. Temperatures fell to highs below freezing near BWI Marshall Airport over the weekend. Highs of 31 degrees were expected on Sunday, before a sweltering 16 degrees was forecast overnight. In the city and county of Baltimore, winter shelters are activated for at least part of this week.

Otherwise, Sunday should be sunny and calm. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly above freezing again on Monday, with highs around 35°C and sunny skies.

The weather service expects a slight chance of snow starting at 1 a.m. Tuesday, when temperatures drop back below 30 degrees. As the morning progresses, the forecast increases to a 30% chance of snow until around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Otherwise, Tuesday is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a high of around 46°C and a low of 33°C overnight.

Wednesday, Christmas Day, is expected to be partly sunny with a high of around 44 degrees. Some clouds are expected to develop overnight, along with another low of 33 degrees.

Thursday is expected to stay about the same, with partly sunny skies and a high of around 45°C and an overnight low of 34°C.

Mostly cloudy skies are expected Friday, with a high temperature of around 48 degrees. The Baltimore region has a 40% chance of rain Friday night through Saturday, when the high temperature is expected to reach 50 degrees.

Baltimore City has activated its winter shelters through the morning of Christmas Eve. Several warming shelters will be open during the day, and Baltimore residents seeking shelter overnight can call the city’s shelter hotline at 443-984-9540 to get connected.

Baltimore County’s freeze shelters — the Eastern Family Resource Center at 9150 Franklin Square Drive in Rosedale and the Community Health Center at 1811 Woodlawn Drive in Woodlawn — also were activated for the season. Homeless residents can call 410-887-8463 to speak with a screener about a shelter bed.
