Will the Cowboys pay Micah Parsons or trade him?

Will the Cowboys pay Micah Parsons or trade him?

In 2024, Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons waited patiently while the team held off on paying receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott. In 2025, Parsons is due for a new deal.

Some think the Cowboys should consider trading him instead of paying him. (Rodney Harrison recently made this case PFT Live.) In recent comments to NFL.com, Cowboys manager Stephen Jones remained silent on the possibility of a Parsons trade.

“Of course we’re fully committed to Dak and CeeDee,” Jones told the league’s in-house media portal, “but after that you still shape things, including Micah.” But Micah is a great player. You’re not doing well in this league He usually lets people like Micah leave the house.”

Throwing in the word “usually” is just enough to make people wonder if the Cowboys might do the unusual.

“We love Micah,” Jones said. “I can’t imagine there being a scenario where he doesn’t wear a star on his helmet.”

Jones’ comments came days after Parsons gave the team a lot of influence during an interview with ESPN.

“At the end of the day everything I need to stay a cowboy until I retire“That’s what I want,” Parsons said.

He later said this: “I would rather be in the best situation, you know? At this point, I don’t think there’s much of a difference in my mind between $30 million and $40 million, you know? And it’s just me talking.”

But he is also the one who will sign the contract. Therefore, his words are more important than those of others.

The Cowboys certainly don’t want to trade Micah. But if he doesn’t want to be traded any more than they don’t want to trade him, the Cowboys have an advantage.

The Cowboys are trying to get players to take less to stay in Dallas. They put an arm around each other’s shoulders and talk about how a star on their helmet unlocks millions in off-field earning opportunities now and in the future. Look at the broadcast industry. Tony Romo, Troy Aikman, Jason Witten, Jason Garrett. All former cowboys. All landed prominent spots in the media.

Parsons has made it clear that he wants to stay. This means that if he asks for too much, he may not get what he wants. Maybe they’ll swap him.

Remember, most non-quarterbacks have only had one major renegotiation in their careers. Teams do them all the time. With the Cowboys under constant pressure in contract negotiations since Ezekiel Elliott, Parsons has given them a chance to fight back.

It’s easy.

“If you want that much, our only option is to trade with you.”

“Don’t mistake me! I’ll take what you offered me!”
