Winter weather advisories for northern MN on Sunday and Monday, with light snow for the rest of the region

WEATHER HISTORY: Lows are almost like living things: they are born, live and die. The two most common places for low pressure systems to form that affect our region are Alberta and Colorado. There are other, less common zones, including the Pacific Ocean. This is where our Sunday and Monday system comes from. Most Pacific lows falter and die off in the Rocky Mountains, but this one will survive the trip. It will warm us up and drop a mix of rain and snow on Sunday and straight snow on Monday. The heaviest snow is currently falling near the Canadian border. Much of Minnesota has one Note on winter weather. The northern tier of the state has one Winter storm warning.

SUNDAY: By midday, the Pacific low will say “aloha,” opening up a 70 percent chance of a mix of rain and snow. Roads can be more slippery, particularly in the Iron Ranges, the Borderland and the North Coast. The maximum temperature is 33°C. The normal temperature is closer to 28 °C. Winds will be easterly at 5 to 15 miles per hour.

MONDAY: On the cooler backside of the low, temperatures will drop enough for snow to end the mix. Accumulations in the north could be 3 to 6 inches. The higher elevations along the north coast could be 5 to 9 inches. The rest of us might get 1-3 inches. The lowest temperature is 27°C. The maximum temperature is around 33°C. Winds will be SE at 10-20 mph.

TUESDAY: Precipitation will end but skies will remain mostly cloudy. The low will be 15. The maximum value will fall to 20. Winds will be NW at 10-20 mph.

WEDNESDAY: Cooler air from Canada will move into our area, dropping temperatures to cooler than normal. The morning low is 0. The high can only reach 10. Winds will be NW at 10-20 mph.

REST OF THE WEEK: On Thursday, the arctic air arrives with low temperatures below zero, even on Lake Superior. However, next Friday we will change again in the other temperature direction, which could lead to a risk of thunderstorms.
