Winter Weather Advisory: Snow showers, freezing rain in the DC area on Christmas Eve morning

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Tuesday as parts of Washington, D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia prepare for a dose of wintry weather on Christmas Eve morning.

The National Weather Service issued the warning due to expected freezing rain and some possible snow showers.

The D.C. area saw the wintry mix move in along the I-95 corridor sometime around 8 a.m. before transitioning to rain in the late morning hours.

The dangerous weather conditions could significantly impact the morning commute and make roads, bridges and overpasses slippery and dangerous. Although most schools are closed for the holidays, last-minute shoppers may encounter unsafe road conditions and are urged to exercise caution.

In addition, power outages may occur.

By the afternoon, all ice accumulations will melt away. High temperatures around 40°C are expected on Tuesday. A dry Christmas Wednesday with high temperatures around 40 degrees. Dry conditions and seasonal temperatures for the remainder of the week, with a chance of rain this weekend.
