Winter Weather Warning for Southeast Michigan: Several inches of snow are expected to begin Christmas week

For those of you looking for snow this holiday week, we have it!

Let’s set the stage: Not-so-cold start to your Monday. Temperatures will be in the 20s, compared to single digits and bitter wind chills last weekend. So a southerly breeze will trigger a warming trend today (highs around 35°C, which is seasonal), but it will still be cold enough to snow.

How much snow can we expect?

A winter weather advisory goes into effect at noon for Lapeer, Oakland, Livingston, Macomb and St. Clair counties and is in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday.

North of M-46 will see the heaviest snow. The area near the Thumb could see 2 to 4 inches of snow, while areas near Flint could see 1 to 3 inches.

Snow is expected to begin falling in the Detroit area around 1 p.m. 1 to 2 inches is expected in the Detroit area. Mixing (freezing rain and sleet) is expected downstream, which could result in slightly less snow accumulation.

Ice could prevail in Washtenaw County, which is under a winter weather advisory from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m

Overnight lows will remain below freezing so declines will persist. Snow will fall overnight, although some light snow is possible Tuesday morning.

Holiday travel forecast

Are you heading north on holiday? Snow accumulations are expected in Traverse City and Mackinac. Be sure to give yourself extra time to travel safely.

On Christmas Eve we give ourselves a break from the snow, although it may snow lightly in the morning hours. Temperatures will warm to almost 40°C and this trend will continue into Christmas, meaning the chance of precipitation in the form of rain on Christmas Eve could decrease.

Mostly dry after Christmas, the warm-up continues. Highs on Friday will be around 44 and around 50 degrees, with rain expected over the weekend.
