Winter weather warnings for 5 million people as snow continues to fall in northern states

About 5 million people in the Great Lakes and southern Appalachians are under winter warnings Monday morning as snow and rain that disrupted post-holiday travel in the Northeast are expected to last well into the week.

Parts of New York have already received more than 58 inches – nearly 5 feet – of snow since the current winter storm began, with Erie, Pennsylvania receiving at least 30 inches.

And for many, there is no relief from the winter storm: lake effect snow warnings remain in effect for Cleveland and also Erie, Pennsylvania – with snow expected to continue in the downwind areas of Lake Erie at least through Wednesday.

Elsewhere, winter storm watches and warnings are in effect for both the Michigan Peninsula and Syracuse, New York.

Affected areas could see 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour fall Monday, reducing visibility and creating potentially hazardous conditions. Temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees below average in parts of the Plains, the Ohio Valley and the Mid-Atlantic, the National Weather Service said.

An arctic blast swept through northern states on Sunday, bringing dangerous conditions to the Northern Plains, the Midwest and the Great Lakes on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

A ban on buses, commercial vehicles and semi-trucks ended at 2 a.m. ET, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said on X.

The northeastern storm that shut down a 90-mile stretch of the New York State Thruway and paralyzed holiday traffic across the country dropped more than three feet of snow around Buffalo and its southern suburbs and is expected to last through the weekend.

State police in a life-saving rescue

A 64-year-old woman heading for a heart transplant had to be rescued by New York State Troopers after she became stranded on a snowy highway. The woman was driven by her husband from Rochester to Cleveland for the critical procedure, her heart kept running by a battery-operated pump. The husband was able to contact a nurse in Cleveland who raised the alarm with state police.

Officers took her to a local hospital before she was flown to Cleveland for a transplant.

“The actions of the Soldiers, medical personnel and transportation teams highlight how critical teamwork and quick thinking can save lives, even in the face of severe weather conditions,” New York State Police said in a statement.

During the winter weather from Thanksgiving through Sunday, the agency said it provided assistance to 111 disabled vehicles and investigated 82 property damage collisions and seven injury collisions.

The Southeast is not spared from the cold snap: A freeze warning affects 3 million people in northern Florida and southern Georgia, with temperatures in Tallahassee at around 33 degrees Fahrenheit, well below the seasonal average.

Record travel weekend

According to the TSA, Thanksgiving weekend is expected to have broken records for the number of travelers, with 2.8 million departing on Saturday – one million more than on the same day in 2023.

Traffic jams at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport were so long on Sunday that people traveling home after visiting loved ones were seen walking from toll booths to terminals. The airport said late Sunday evening that traffic conditions had improved, but still advised travelers to allow extra time for their journey.
