Winter weather warnings in 13 states as 10 inches of snow is imminent

Millions of Americans are being hit by severe snowstorms – authorities are issuing winter storm watches or warnings for 13 states.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a series of warnings Monday evening, many of which will remain in effect through Wednesday. Travel will be difficult in many areas affected by the snowfall, with snow accumulations of up to 25cm possible in some areas, and motorists should be aware that roads could be “dangerous”, forecasters said.

The warnings follow a series of similar recent NWS orders as winter continues to intensify across the United States. Some areas have already experienced whiteout conditions due to snowstorms, while in others storms caused power outages. And the latest NWS warnings and advisories confirm that the bitter winter shows no signs of abating. Full winter storm warnings have been issued for areas of Alaska, South Dakota and Wyoming. While the NWS has issued warnings for New Mexico, Colorado, Maine, Wisconsin, New York, Vermont, Michigan, Massachusetts, Montana and New Hampshire. For parts of Alaska, an additional warning is in effect in addition to the official warning mentioned above.

The first winter storm warning has been issued for the Black Hills, cutting them in half South Dakota And Wyoming. The warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Wednesday and the NWS warned residents that snow will accumulate between 3 and 9 inches, although “larger amounts are possible in higher elevations.” 30 miles per hour.

Over MassachusettsNorthern Worcester, Northern Middlesex, Western Franklin, Western Hampshire and Northern Berkshire counties have all been advised of inclement weather.

And clean New MexicoJohnson and Bartlett Mesas, including Raton Pass, are also under an advisory of “up to an inch” of snow.

ColoradoThe Wet Mountain Valley was warned that due to the snowfall, “roads and especially bridges and overpasses are likely to become slippery and dangerous. Plan for slippery road conditions.” A similar advisory applies to the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, as well as the surrounding area “Trinidad Vicinity/Western Las Animas County Below 7,500 feet” and the Walsenburg Vicinity/Upper Huerfano River Basin Below 7,500 feet Foot.”

South-central and southwest Maine and central, north and south New Hampshire were also informed that Tuesday morning “snow will transition to a period of mixed precipitation before transitioning to freezing rain.” Coastal Hancock, Coastal Washington and Aroostook counties in Maine are also under the advisory, as are “portions of Central Highlands, Far Eastern, Interior DownEast, North Woods and Penobscot Valley”.

Iron County and the city of Hurley in Wisconsin were also given a snow warning. Up to 10 inches of snow is possible in northern Iron County, according to NWS forecasters.

In VermontAn advisory is in effect for Bennington and Windham counties for snow and sleet into the evening before becoming freezing rain with light ice accumulations.

In new Yorka snow and sleet warning for Northern Warren, Hamilton, Northern Fulton and Northern Herkimer counties.

While Gogebic County in Michigan is subject to an NWS “Winter Weather Advisory… (until) Tuesday 6 a.m. CST. For the winter storm watch late Tuesday evening into Wednesday evening.” Motorists were advised to “expect slippery road conditions this evening. The dangerous conditions could impact Tuesday morning commutes. Late Tuesday into Wednesday, travel could become difficult and visibility could drop below 1/4 mile due to snowfall and blowing snow.”
