A brief snowfall and freezing rain leave a coating on the ground as people get out and about this Christmas Eve.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Philadelphia and surrounding counties.

According to Action News meteorologist Payton Domschke, sleet and freezing rain are favored in the heart of the Delaware Valley, including Philadelphia. Since the temperature in the region has been below 32 degrees for over 48 hours, even a small layer of ice can quickly stick to untreated surfaces.

PennDOT crews were out cleaning roads Monday, with trucks spraying major highways like I-95 with brine. This helps with snow and ice on road surfaces, especially during the morning commute and with all the leisure travelers and people shopping and visiting.

PennDOT urges drivers to be prepared.
