WNY Winter Weather Advisory

ROCHESTER, NY (WHAM) – Expect a fresh round of cold, wind and snow in WNY over the next few days.

In most areas around Rochester, all three weather elements mentioned above will be manageable.

Here’s a look at the timing for snow and wind today, tonight and Thursday. We will see a few snow showers late morning into early afternoon.

Today’s snow amounts range from a minimal to 1/2 inch thick near Rochester. Tonight, most areas around Rochester will see up to 1 inch of snow as a cold front moves through the area.

Areas west of Rochester will see slightly more snow as a southwesterly airflow crosses Lake Erie. Parts of western Orleans, Genesee and Wyoming counties are expected to see between 2 and 4 inches of snow.

The forecast for Thursday could call for another 2 to 4 inches of precipitation west of Rochester. Another layer of up to 2 inches will be possible in and around the city of Rochester later Thursday.

Due to expected snowfall, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for most of WNY from 10:00 PM tonight until 4:00 AM Friday morning. A lake effect snow warning is in effect in Wyoming County from 7 p.m. tonight until 4 a.m. Friday morning.

Again, snow totals near Rochester will only be between 2 and 5 inches by early Friday morning, while areas further west will see amounts between 4 and 8 inches by early Friday morning.

The wind will also become stronger in the late afternoon and Thursday. Since snow is expected in the weather forecast, there will be snowdrifts. Limited visibility is expected later this evening and into Thursday as snow moves across the area.

Peak gusts for today will be between 30 and 35 mph and peak gusts for Thursday will be between 40 and 45 mph. A wind advisory is in effect for Yates County as peak gusts may reach 50 mph southeast of Rochester.

By Friday afternoon both the wind and snow will gradually ease, but temperatures will remain cold with highs around 20°C.
