WSDOT urges caution as snow hits mountain passes again Sunday – KIRO 7 News Seattle

A break from heavy snowfall on mountain passes in Washington made for a good travel window Friday, although forecasts suggest the window could close quickly.

Snow levels reported by the NWS remained at 4,000 feet, about the elevation of Stevens Pass and about 1,000 feet above the summit of Steven’s Pass.

That gave people the opportunity to cross the mountains in the most favorable conditions seen in the Cascades in days.

“The road conditions were great,” said Danielle DeBray, who drove to Snoqualmie Pass. “I was really surprised that it was so easy. There are people on the move, but it was easy to do.”

The remnants of this week’s mountain snow remained on the side streets of I-90, but the highway itself remained wet.

Rain was primarily the issue at Snoqualmie Pass, and with the NWS expecting snow levels to drop to 3,500 feet on Saturday, the window for reasonable travel conditions is closing.

“We are already anticipating a new possible storm or similar storm-like conditions potentially brewing as early as next Sunday,” said Scott Klepach, a spokesman for the Washington Department of Transportation.

According to the NWS, a strong system will move in Sunday and into the start of the week, dropping snow levels to 2,500 feet. Klepach recommends people think about how urgent they will feel to hike over the mountains these days.

“If you’re unsure, stay home and postpone your trip if possible.” Klebach said, “I know that’s not the most popular statement, but it can really help clear the way.”

He says travelers should make sure they have the correct tires and chains and have the knowledge to put on the chains.

“We can’t stop the rain. We can’t prevent the snow, but we can do our best to make sure the roads are as clear as possible. You know, drivers and travelers can also help us by being really attentive.”
