“Wukong wins The Game Awards Player’s Voice Vote”

This article covers a developing story. Keep checking in with us as we will add more information as it becomes available.

Summary

  • Black Myth: Wukong won the Player’s Voice Award at this year’s Game Awards.

  • Black Myth: Wukong managed to win the award from Mihoyo fans, as did Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

There are many, many awards given out at the Game Awards, some of which are a little more important than others. Game of the Year is of course a big award, but the Player’s Voice award has become just as important to many and is seen as a stamp of approval by the public as it is an award entirely voted for by the players.

Previous winners include big titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, Genshin Impact, Halo Infinite (it used to be good) and Ghost of Tsushima, and this year should also add another title to that list. A whopping 30 games were nominated in the first round of voting, including heavyweights like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Black Myth: Wukong, as well as a dozen live service games that weren’t actually released this year.

Player Voice should give players more recognition

Too many live service games that don’t represent 2024 are clogging up the shortlist.

Most of these games were quickly voted out, with only ten making it to the second round, but we also saw the losses of games like Astro Bot, Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth and Silent Hill 2. What was left was a selection of this year’s best single player games, together with a disturbing amount of gacha. Unfortunately, nothing changed when the final five nominees were announced.

Just a few days ago, presenter Geoff Keighley revealed the final four games and a DLC nominated for Player’s Voice. Black Myth: Wukong, Zenless Zone Zero, Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree were all named finalists, proving once and for all why publicity shouldn’t be the deciding factor for Game of the Year.

Black Myth: Wukong wins Player’s Voice at the Game Awards

Black Myth: Wukong was probably considered the favorite at launch since he had already received other player-voted accolades, and the huge sales upon release suggested that the numbers were on his side. It’s also very possible that Mihoyo fans were split between Genshin Impact and Zenless Zone Zero, giving Wukong the win. Congratulations Game Science, you officially have the public seal of approval.
