Yankees’ new star Cody Bellinger is married to new teammate’s ex as MLB trade creates awkward love triangle

Cody Bellinger’s impending move to the Yankees could make things very awkward in New York – as he is currently married to one of his new teammate’s ex-girlfriends.

The Yankees acquired Bellinger in a trade from the Chicago Cubs, who sent $5 million in salary relief and received right-hander Cody Poteet in return.

This is another big boost for the team after crosstown rival the New York Mets won the hotly contested race for Juan Soto earlier this month.

However, eagle-eyed fans have already pointed out a very unpleasant subplot in Bellinger’s trade with the Yankees: his wife used to date Giancarlo Stanton.

The former MVP, 29, is married to stunning model Chase Bellinger, 27, who was known as Chase Carter before their wedding in December 2023.

The couple has been together since the summer of 2020, just over a year after the end of her relationship with Stanton — the five-time All-Star slugger who recently finished his seventh season with the Yankees.

Stanton has three years left on a huge 13-year contract worth $325 million, meaning he isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

However, since he and Chase went their separate ways, the 35-year-old was dating 27-year-old Asiana Hung-Barnes, but the pair reportedly called it quits over the summer.

Chase also has two daughters with Cody – Caiden, three, and Cy, one – meaning she has fully moved on and settled down with the ex-Cubs star in the five years since her romance with Stanton.

Bellinger still has two years left on his contract with an opt-out after 2025 as he prepares to join the Yankees.

The former Chicago player, whose father Clay helped the Yankees win World Series titles in 1999 and 2000, is owed $27.5 million in 2025 as part of the first of two player options in a three-year, $80 million contract -Dollar.

He also has a $25 million player option for 2026 with a $5 million buyout that would be payable in equal installments on January 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027.

Bellinger, who plays first base and center field, was named Rookie of the Year in 2017 and MVP in 2019 before suffering a decline in production that was attributed at least in part to injuries. He also helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win a World Series title in 2020.

He was released by the Dodgers in November 2022 and signed a one-year, $17.5 million contract with Chicago a month later, where he returned to form.
