Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes Reflects on Kevin Costner’s Drama: ‘It Wasn’t Particularly Fun to Be Here’

Taylor Sheridan’s epic western series Yellowstone will finally come to an end on December 15th, after a highly anticipated fifth season that unknowingly contained quite a bit of drama.

The exit from the series is led by Kevin Costner, who is now concentrating on his solo projects like this horizon Saga caused quite a stir, and his former co-stars are now speaking out about his departure after the series ended.

Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, sat in esquire to discuss the upcoming series finale and his own relationship with the series, which he describes as acrimonious due to his sense of self-criticism.

“I want to like the show, and I bet one day I will, but it was kind of difficult because I was still on it.” explained the 40-year-old. “I want to give it a few years, just to cleanse the palate. Then I’ll go through all of this.”

He also spoke about Kevin’s exit from the series, which was due to an alleged feud with the creator that delayed the final season for nearly two years. “Hopefully everyone can see that it was time,” he says about the change.

“To be completely honest, it meant that part of Kevin was gone, that part of the conflict was gone.” Luke added. “Of course it wasn’t particularly fun to be here. I’m not pointing fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we’ve ever filmed.”

When asked how he was doing Yellowstone When the series finally came to an end after almost seven years on air, he called it “good timing” and continued: “Seven years is a long time to do anything and I’ve never had a character for more than a few months played.” I loved everything.

“But there is a part of it that – when you read the final episodes – realizes that there is a finality.” Luke also commented on the potential for spin-offs beyond the prequel and sequel series that have already aired (1923, 1883) or in the works (a spin-off starring Matthew McConaughey).

“There are always talks about spin-offs. I would do it (but) I just don’t understand how it would work when the story is over,” he added. “Kayce wants to be a cowboy and be happy with his family.”

“He doesn’t want to kill people anymore. He doesn’t want the weight of a huge mega ranch, which isn’t sustainable in this day and age. He wants his little piece of heaven. It’s that simple.”

When asked how he felt reading the final scripts, Luke reflected on the emotions he felt at the time, saying, “Taylor told me from the beginning, ‘I know how the show ends, but I want to.’ not that you know.’ how it ends. I think you’d just play things differently (if you knew the ending), and I don’t want you to know anything.'”

“So I kept that in mind and wanted to wait until we shot the very last episode to read it. But it had been so long since we shot and I felt like I just couldn’t remember what we’d done. I did.” I don’t remember how to play Kayce.

He continued: “I thought, ‘If I just read the last one, it would definitely help.’ So I read it and it made me feel completely connected to the story again and I couldn’t imagine it ending any other way.
