Young opener sees Everton crush Wolves and ease pressure on Dyche | Premier League

Everton beat Wolves four times to claim their biggest home win since April 2019 to ease some of the growing pressure on their manager Sean Dyche.

The Premier League’s worst scorers suddenly found their fortunes had changed when Ashley Young scored his first goal in more than two years to seal a crucial victory just eight months before his 40th birthday.

But becoming the club’s oldest goalscorer and the oldest player to reach 50 goals in the Premier League was just the start of an extraordinary game on one of the few remaining evenings at Goodison Park.

On-loan midfielder Orel Mangala, found guilty by the video assistant referee of intervening from an offside position when James Tarkowski scored, made amends by firing home for the first time since joining from Lyon.

However, luck didn’t extend to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, back in the team after their defeat to Manchester United, whose goalless streak extended to ten games after Craig Dawson was credited with two second-half own goals after being scored by the striker came under pressure who looked much better than in the last few games.

The result puts even more pressure on Wolves head coach Gary O’Neil, with the team second to last and four players behind safety.

With games against top six sides Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, and having already been beaten 4-0 at Old Trafford, this was a must-win game for Everton even in December and the success gave them a lead of five to the bottom three.

However, no one could have predicted the one-sidedness of a game that pitted the league’s worst attack (10 goals) against the worst defense (Wolves conceded 35) before kick-off, and the subdued atmosphere made it clear just how high the stakes were.

Everton made a quick turnaround with a lunchtime kick-off in Saturday’s Merseyside derby. Dyche admitted afterwards that they will not be resting on their laurels and will get straight back into training on Thursday.
